Span Helps Nonprofits File Form 990

SPAN offers a variety of tax return e-filing solutions to help users quickly complete their returns and transmit them directly to the IRS. The next major deadline is the Form 990 deadline for nonprofit organizations.

Filing this return by the deadline is very important as it’s necessary to comply with the IRS in order for nonprofits to maintain their tax-exempt status. However, with the help of ExpressTaxExempt and ExpressTaxFilings, tax-exempt groups don’t have to worry. They can complete their Form 990 and transmit them directly to the IRS in no time.

About Form 990

Form 990 is the Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax. Even though nonprofits may be exempt from income taxes, they still have to file this form on an annual basis.

This form is used by government agencies to make sure that nonprofits aren’t abusing their tax exempt status. It’s also used by the IRS to make financial information about nonprofits available to the public, so needless to say the form is taken pretty seriously.

The 990 deadline varies based on an organization’s tax year because it’s due on the 15th day of the 5th month after it ends. For example, if your organization has a calendar tax year then your tax year ends in December and your Form 990 is due by May 15.

If your organization runs on a fiscal tax year, meaning it runs for 12 consecutive months and ends in any month except for December then your deadline varies based on the month it ends. For example, if your tax year ends in June then your Form 990 deadline is November 15.

Also, If you used file extension Form 8868 with ExpressExtension or another e-file extension provider in May for a 6-month extension on your Form 990 then your extension is up, and your Form 990 is due on November 15. For these reasons, November 15 is a major Form 990 deadline day.

It’s important that you file by your Form 990 deadline or you will have major penalties to deal with. For example, if your organization fails to file by the deadline and has less than $1,000,000 in gross receipts you will be charged $20 per every day your return is late.

This penalty will continue to build until it reaches $10K or 5% of your organization's total gross receipts, depending on which amount is smaller. If your organization has more than $1,000,000 in gross receipts then the penalty increases to $100 per day with a maximum penalty of $50,000.

Plus, along with facing these expenses, you will also be putting your tax-exempt status at risk. If any organization fails to file their Form 990 for 3 years in a row they will automatically lose their tax-exempt status!

However, there’s no need to worry. You can use ExpressTaxExempt or ExpressTaxFilings to quickly file your form 990. ExpressTaxExempt focuses on 990 forms while ExpressTaxFilings, soon to be TaxBandits, offers a variety of forms from the 940 series, ACA forms, tax extensions, and more.

With either site, you will create your free account and follow the step-by-step instructions to complete your form in a matter of minutes. You will finish your form and have it transmitted directly to the IRS before you know it!

SPAN Enterprises Partners with GuideStar to Benefit Nonprofits

SPAN Enterprises, parent company of ExpressTaxExempt, is excited to announce the launch of Express990 in collaboration with GuideStar!

Express990 allows nonprofits to seamlessly export their completed IRS Form 990, 990-EZ, and 990-PF returns directly to GuideStar with to be viewed on GuideStar.

The Journey Begins

The initiation to this great collaboration began with an effort to maximize the endless possibilities for nonprofit organizations. ExpressTaxExempt began searching for ways to assist our users and nonprofits overall.

As the world’s largest source of nonprofit information, GuideStar collects pertinent information, including annual IRS filings, and distributes it through its website and more than 200 partner sites and applications. We knew instantly that by collaborating the useful tools of both ExpressTaxExempt and GuideStar, the needs of nonprofit organizations could be met directly through the creation of Express990.

With the IRS requiring 990 forms to be displayed for public inspection, and a large percentage of our users already utilizing the services of GuideStar, it became clear that both companies should work together to aid nonprofits.

The newly launched Express990 feature prompts users to authorize sending their returns to GuideStar as part of the filing process. Up to 8 million users, donors and potential supporters will have almost immediate access to up-to-date information for the nonprofits that select this option.

Benefits of Express990

By integrating the services of both companies, the amount of time for an organization’s 990 information to be made available for potential donors and supporters will be reduced significantly.

Normally, it takes months before GuideStar can obtain 990s from the IRS, because the IRS must process them first. Express990 eliminates this delay; each return is transmitted to GuideStar as soon as the IRS accepts its e-filing.

“The collaboration between ExpressTaxExempt and GuideStar provides much needed assistance and resources to nonprofit organizations,” said Naga Palanisamy, Co-founder & President of SPAN Enterprises. “Nonprofits can now seamlessly export their completed IRS Form 990 returns to the GuideStar database for immediate availability. This new functionality further fulfills the mission of our company, to help exempt organizations continue making a difference in their communities.”
Additionally, valuable information regarding each organization such as its mission, income, expenses, finances, and leadership will be completely transparent to donors and potential supporters. This transparency can greatly increase a nonprofit’s chances of recognition and receiving funding in a more timely manner.

It Gets Even Better!

Nonprofits will also have access to several exclusive ExpressTaxExempt features, including management of reviewers, approvers, and additional users, along with internal audit checks, multi-organizational filing and multi-tax period support. Tax returns filed with ExpressTaxExempt are transmitted directly to the IRS and can be accepted within hours. Users also receive real-time email notifications with tax return updates. Best of all, ExpressTaxExempt offers a 100 percent, US-based customer support team for any and all inquiries an organization may have in regard to its e-filing.

“As part of our premier products, ExpressTaxExempt users can now conveniently file their organizations’ W2 or 1099 forms using the same account within ExpressTaxFilings,” said Agie Sundaram, CEO of SPAN Enterprises.
SPAN Enterprises is proud to launch Express990 in collaboration with GuideStar to assist nonprofit organizations. Organizations will now have the ability to simultaneously file their required tax forms and tell over 8 million potential donors and supporters how they are making a difference in the world each day.
